(1) Morning Microdose
The Benefits of Taking A Daily Moment for Yourself
A moment for yourself can be 1 minute, 5 minutes, 30 minutes or whatever you make it. You get to quantify it. When you take a moment for yourself on a daily basis, it’s a window of time that your focus should be 100% on you.
This doesn’t necessarily mean pampering (although it definitely could be — eg professional massage, pedicure, bubble bath, etc.); rather, it’s about allowing yourself to prioritize your needs for a finite period of time with the intention of recharging.
Here are 3 concrete examples:
Walk around the block with your phone in Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode (in case you want to listen to music or a podcast without interruption)
Go into a room with no children, spouses, pets, or anyone/anything else that’s distracting, and sit quietly with your eyes shut. Some call this meditation. For others, it’s simply a quiet moment in personal, uninterrupted thought. Again, put your phone in Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode
Use a relatively inexpensive tool like a trigger point ball like this or this, foam roller, or massage gun to release stress or tension. They only takes a few minutes to use and are very simple. These tools literally do the work for you, all you need to do is roll on them or push them against your muscles.
(2) Myth of the Day
“It’s possible to change myself overnight”
Most things about yourself you cannot change overnight, unless you are changing something temporary, like a haircut (it will grow back), contacts (your eyesight is still bad), new car (it will lose that new car smell/excitement soon enough). The list goes on.
With that being said, it IS possible to change your mindset overnight. However, once you commit to changing your mindset, you must continuously work to focus your new mindset on whatever you have set out to accomplish for yourself.
A concrete example is: “I want to lose 10 lbs”
What most people really mean, but leave out of the sentence, is “I want to lose 10 lbs and maintain it.” You cannot lose 10 lbs overnight (despite the claims made by late-night ads for colon cleanses) and maintain that weight loss. What you can change overnight is your weight-loss mindset: “I want to lose 10 lbs because I am committed to lowering my blood pressure and cholesterol, so I will mindfully eat and exercise daily. A weight loss of 10 lbs is completely possible with my new mindset.” Then, you remind yourself of that every single day.
This is how you change your mindset and consequently change your life.
(3) Action Item
Take a moment for yourself today. During this moment, focus on a memory of a time when you felt free. Don’t dwell too much on what feeling free means. Just go with it.
How does your body feel reflecting on this moment of freedom?
What would it take to feel that free again?
Would that freedom be possible with a change in your mindset?
