Good morning and welcome to the Daily Self Newsletter! Yesterday was a holiday in the US, so I took the day off to get some much-needed rest outdoor therapy. I’m spending time with family in Mammoth Lakes this week, and then backpacking Yellowstone National Park next week. These trips inspired me to think about the influence that beautiful places have on my mental health.
One thing for you to think about
When you're dealing with stress, loss, fatigue, depression, or have simply lost your way in life, finding solace in beautiful places can be a profoundly rejuvenating experience.
For me, I love the outdoors. Not only does getting outside help me focus my energy, but it also is a productive, chemical-free way to cope with my depression. I value the simplicity of nature and its capacity to reset the body's “fight or flight” response, which can be triggered by life's stressors.
Keep in mind that your "beautiful places" do not have to be in nature. Wherever you find beauty, be it a city skyline or the ocean’s horizon, look for simple things that offer catharsis and renewal. It's all about finding places that resonate with you, making them a sanctuary for when you need restorative energy, and then drawing strength from that energy.
Discovery: Every day is an opportunity to learn more about yourself and others. Reflect on these ideas and consider sharing.
One thing for you to ask yourself
What are the “beautiful places” in your life that you can turn to for solace and rejuvenation, and how can you draw strength from them during challenging times? They can be places to go alone or with others.
Use these questions as journaling prompts.
One thing for you to try
It’s not always easy to get to our beautiful places due to time constraints and commitments. If this is the case for you, try incorporating elements of your beautiful places into your daily surroundings. For example, if you find comfort in the sound of ocean waves, try playing recordings of ocean sounds to fall asleep, or incorporate coastal-themed decor in your home or workspace to create a more calming and rejuvenating environment.
Experiment: Growth happens when you step outside of your comfort zone and make brave choices. Reply to this email or leave a comment and let me know how it went.
