🌺 This week’s theme: The Restart
Alright, we’ve all made excuses for not exercising.
I’m tired
I’m injured
I’m sick
I don’t have time
I have kids
I’m not a morning person
I don’t know how
And the list goes on…
If these excuses feel triggering, then you’ve definitely made one. I know I have made ALL OF THEM. Now, I totally get it. Life happens, and we all have valid reasons for taking breaks from exercise. But here's the thing - it's not those few days or even a couple of weeks off that pose the real challenge. No, it's getting back into that exercise groove that can be a real struggle.
5 tips for restarting your exercise routine
Exercise can be tough, especially when life gets busy or mental barriers kick in. It's totally normal to find it harder than before when getting back into a fitness routine after a break. Remember, your body needs time to rebuild strength and endurance. Taking small steps during your restart will make it much more manageable since routines require energy and change.
Start with a mini workout: Begin with a short, manageable workout session to ease back into the groove. It could be a 15-minute walk, a quick yoga flow, or a few sets of bodyweight exercises. Something is always better than nothing!
Set goals: You know what works for me? Setting a BIG GOAL and then breaking it down into small, achievable goals that align with where I’m at in my fitness journey (e.g. after having knee surgery, just walking around the block was a huge accomplishment). Start with what feels manageable and gradually increase the intensity and duration as you regain your strength and stamina. It's all about making progress at your own pace and celebrating small victories along the way.
Find your passion: Discover an activity that you genuinely enjoy. Whether it's dancing, hiking, kickboxing, or Zumba, choosing something you love will make it easier to stick with your routine.
Create a schedule: Block out specific times in your calendar dedicated to exercise. Treat these slots as important appointments with yourself. By making it a priority, you'll be less likely to skip your workout and more likely to stay consistent.
Find an accountability buddy: Enlist the support of a friend or family member who shares your fitness goals. Having someone to encourage and motivate you can make a world of difference. You can work out together, share progress updates, and cheer each other on.
Remember, restarting an exercise routine is about progress, not perfection. Be patient with yourself, celebrate your achievements, and have fun along the way!
